Wellbeing & Support

You're Never Alone

At Grappenhall & Widnes Netball Club, we believe netball is about far more than the scoreline. It's about friendship, confidence, belonging and supporting one another through every stage of life.

Whether you're a player, parent, guardian, coach, volunteer or supporter, everyone deserves to feel safe, valued and supported. If you're finding things difficult, whether it's because of sport or something happening away from the court, you're not alone. We're here to help where we can and guide you towards the right support when needed.

Supporting Every Stage of Life

Everyone's journey is different

As we grow, our bodies, confidence and emotions naturally change. Life also brings different experiences that can affect how we feel, both physically and mentally. Whether you're learning to play, navigating adolescence, balancing family life, returning to sport after a break or experiencing menopause, we want every player to feel supported both on and off the court.

Growing Up & Feeling Your Best

Growing up is different for everyone. As our bodies change, it's completely normal for our confidence, emotions, energy levels and performance in sport to change too.

Everyone develops at their own pace. There is no “right” timeline.

Growing bodies

Growing may affect:

  • Balance and coordination
  • Energy levels
  • Confidence
  • Sleep
  • Recovery
  • Motivation

These are all a normal part of adolescence.

Confidence & Body Image

It's easy to compare ourselves with others, especially online.

At Grappenhall & Widnes Netball Club we celebrate:

  • Effort
  • Kindness
  • Teamwork
  • Respect
  • Progress

Not appearance. Everyone develops differently and every body is unique.

Understanding Monthly Cycles

Many players experience hormonal changes during adolescence and adulthood. These changes can sometimes affect:

  • Energy levels
  • Concentration
  • Confidence
  • Motivation
  • Recovery
  • Performance

Some training sessions may naturally feel harder than others. That's completely normal.

Players should always feel comfortable taking a short break, adapting activities or speaking privately with a coach if needed. Nobody is expected to explain personal details if they don't wish to.

Supporting Adult Players

Life doesn't stop when you arrive at training. Many of our adult players balance:

  • Work
  • Family life
  • Caring responsibilities
  • Shift work
  • Everyday pressures

Some players may also experience hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause. These can affect:

  • Sleep
  • Fatigue
  • Concentration
  • Recovery
  • Joint stiffness
  • Confidence
  • Body temperature

Everyone's experience is different. Looking after yourself should always come before pushing through discomfort.

Returning to Netball

Whether you've taken time away because of work, family, pregnancy, injury or simply life getting busy — you'll always receive a warm welcome.

Everyone starts somewhere.

Looking After Your Body

Simple habits make a big difference.

  • Stay hydrated
  • Eat regular balanced meals
  • Prioritise sleep
  • Warm up properly
  • Cool down afterwards
  • Stretch regularly
  • Rest when needed
  • Listen to your body
Looking After Your Mind

Mental wellbeing is just as important as physical wellbeing. Things that may help include:

  • Talking to someone you trust
  • Spending time outdoors
  • Taking breaks from social media
  • Staying active
  • Practising mindfulness
  • Breathing exercises
  • Celebrating small achievements

Remember… bad days don't last forever.

Simple Breathing Exercise

Try Box Breathing

  • Breathe in for 4 seconds.
  • Hold for 4 seconds.
  • Breathe out for 4 seconds.
  • Hold for 4 seconds.

Repeat until you begin to feel calmer.

Self Care Ideas
  • Go for a walk.
  • Drink some water.
  • Listen to music.
  • Read a book.
  • Spend time with friends.
  • Cuddle your pet.
  • Watch your favourite film.
  • Write down three positive things about today.
  • Get outside for some fresh air.
  • Take a break from your phone.
Supporting Your Young Player

Many of our players are supported by mums, dads, grandparents, foster carers, older siblings and other family members. You don't need to know everything about netball or growing up to make a huge difference.

The best support often comes from:

  • Listening without judgement.
  • Encouraging effort rather than perfection.
  • Being patient.
  • Celebrating progress.
  • Helping create healthy routines.
  • Letting them know it's okay to have difficult days.

If you're ever unsure, our Welfare Team is always happy to help.

Coach Promise

Every player is different. Our coaches are committed to:

  • Putting wellbeing before performance.
  • Respecting privacy.
  • Encouraging confidence.
  • Creating a safe and inclusive environment.
  • Supporting players through every stage of life.
  • Never pressuring someone to continue if they're unwell or in pain.
Looking Out For Your Teammates

Sometimes a teammate might be having a difficult day. If someone seems quieter than usual:

  • Check in with them.
  • Include them.
  • Listen.
  • Encourage them to speak to a trusted adult if needed.
  • Tell a coach if you're worried about their safety.

Small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

My child suddenly doesn't want to attend training.

This can happen for many reasons including confidence, friendships, school pressures or simply having an off day. Start with a conversation and let them know you're there to listen.

My child seems more emotional than usual.

Growing up naturally brings physical and emotional changes. Patience, reassurance and routine often help. If you're concerned, speak to your GP.

What if I'm worried about another player?

Please speak to our Welfare Team or one of our coaches. We'd always rather know than miss an opportunity to help.
